President 2021
Association of Vitreo Retina Specialists of Sri Lanka

WELCOME TO THE COLOMBO RETINA MEETING

President’s Message

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you all to the Colombo Retina Meeting 2021, the first hybrid congress since its inception. Across the world, we are dealing with extraordinary challenges to all aspects of our daily lives due to the global pandemic situation. It is significantly more perturbing and unique fo the medical community and all those in the front lines of battling the COVID-19 threat. In addition to providing routine clinical care, we have to take additional measures to protect our patients, our colleagues, and our loved ones. As ophthalmologists, we will have to continue to look after our patients and manage our clinical work and continue to meet to share our science and research for professional development and provision of safe and efficacious treatment for our patients.

The 10th anniversary Colombo Retina Meeting 2021, which was initially scheduled to be held in January 2021, was regrettably a casualty of the current pandemic situation and had to be rescheduled. This decision was taken partly because of the Sri Lankan government safety protocols, travel, quarantine restrictions, and to ensure our colleague’s safety and prevent the spreading of the virus in our society.
Despite the ongoing hardships and uncertainty, we are delighted to commence The Colombo Retina Meeting 2021 on 6th and 7th November 2021, with a limited number of participants respecting the current government advice concerning COVID-19 control and protecting our delegates other stakeholders from potential infection risk and prevent possible community spread. However, we are delighted to present this event as a hybrid conference, facilitating the participation of local and international delegates and minimizing the interruption to themselves due to travel and quarantine restrictions.
International experts from Australia, India, Singapore, Spain and the United Kingdom would be joining us, together with our eminent local faculty, to share their experience and new scientific advancements.
I hope that this hybrid meeting will continue to offer a unique, refreshing experience to all participants by providing the opportunity to create new friendships and acquire new knowledge to improve your clinical practice enhancing patient outcomes and safety.
